CHRIS DAVIES: Avoid the nutritional supplement route to success

TERRE HAUTE — Weight loss may be among your New Year’s resolutions. If so, you may want to avoid the nutritional supplement route to success.

Maybe you have seen the commercial hawking a $153 weight loss supplement that is “much too strong for the casual dieter.” Leave it to the nutritional supplement industry to introduce generic supplements. The problem is that all supplements, including the branded Letoprin supplement, are not regulated for efficacy. This means that they may or may not work.

The FDA regulates prescription drugs and generic prescription drugs. Generic prescription drugs are held to the same manufacturing and efficacy standards as their branded counterparts. Though there tends to be some differences as you may have experienced in using generics, most are nearly identical.

The inflated Leptoprin price tag leads you to believe that the supplement will have the excess body fat melting away like an ice cream cone in August. As you may remember the commercial claims, Leptoprin is much too strong for those wanting to lose a few vanity pounds. Leptoprin is challenging you to buy this product.

Compounding the problem is that many who consume supplements in an effort to lose weight are taking other prescription medications. Some drug-to-drug interactions can kill you. Always check with your health-care provider when considering nutritional supplements.

Included in the supplement industry are herbs and other concoctions. In an effort to sell books, “a guy” has compiled a book of so-called natural cures for all diseases. Of course the FDA and drug industry do not want you to know about his remedies because they work and are much cheaper than prescription drugs. Again, here is another example of loose standards on supplements and inflated marketing practices that defraud the public out of billions of dollars each year.

My point is that you can keep searching for the easy way out or the magic bullet to help you lose weight because a simple cure is not available. If your gym or trainer is pushing supplements, shakes or drinks to help you lose weight, save your money. They are merely lining their pockets. Better yet, invest in a weight management class, i.e. Weight Watchers, or hire a registered dietician to help you develop a plan for permanent weight loss.

Eat less and exercise more. Losing weight should not drain you of energy. Correct weight loss should have you brimming with energy and feeling well.
