Downtown TH sizzles this weekend with Brickyard BBQ Fest

BBQ contest, live music, cruise-in, kids’ games planned

TERRE HAUTE — Clabber Girl Brickyard BBQ Fest will be the site of the annual BBQ contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and will feature Pit Master contestants from all across the United States. KCBS is the world’s largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts, and the Clabber Girl Brickyard BBQ Fest will be one of almost 300 sanctioned contests coast-to-coast throughout America.

“This year should be quite an event,” said Teresa Shaffer, director of public relations for Clabber Girl. “We have contestants coming from as far away as Texas and Iowa.”

It is undeniable that barbeque is popular and well-loved in American society, but barbeque tastes and cooking methods differ. Whether your favorite style is Kansas City, Memphis, or Texas; barbeque is more than a method of cooking, it is part of our culture. This year’s Clabber Girl Brickyard BBQ Fest will highlight both professionals and grill masters as they come together to showcase their recipes and entertain on-lookers in their quest for the top honors.

Young bakers can also be competitors in this year’s Brickyard Throwdown Bakeoff at the BBQ Fest. Prizes will be awarded for the best cookies, cakes, breads and pies and contestants will need to incorporate a Clabber Girl product, of course. Those interested in entering the contest should contact Susan Royce at Clabber Girl at (812) 478-7177 or sroyce@clabbergirl.com.

The event will incorporate the 2011 Gladiator Challenge Competition hosted by the Union Hospital Fitness Center, starting with a Pump Fest at 8 a.m. Saturday and followed by a Strongman Competition at 12:30 p.m. in the east parking lot behind the Clabber Girl building. For information contact John Barrett at (812) 238-7311or jbarrett@uhhg.org.

The event is scheduled for today and Saturday. Featured entertainment kicks off tonight with 1950s-style with a cruise-in car show and live music from the Blair Carman Band. On Saturday, bands take the stage starting at 4 p.m. with 15th and Hulman Street Band and Octane at 6:30. After dinner, fans will enjoy Cooke and Belle at 9 p.m. live in concert.

The festival will take place the weekend before the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, with attractions for the whole family to enjoy. In anticipation of the heat, the Terre Haute Fire Department has even created a water challenge for kids of all ages.

“The Fire Department has really come to our rescue,” Shaffer said. “We needed a way to keep cool and they were willing to create this fun firefighter challenge for the kids area.”

Following the theme of great food and racing fun, attractions also include kids’ games courtesy of Walmart and racing attractions brought to you by Sinden Racing.

The BBQ Fest will be on Ninth Street between Wabash Avenue and Cherry Street in the Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace, bordering Clabber Girl and Hulman Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way of the Wabash Valley as it kicks off its annual pilot campaign.

Great tasting BBQ will be prepared by vendors that include: Dalton’s, Lil’ Pigs, American Heritage Grill and Rick’s Smokehouse & Grill.
