Christian Youth Theater coming to Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE — Christian Youth Theater, better known as CYT, will soon be available in Terre Haute.

CYT is an after-school theater arts training program for students dedicated to developing character in children and adults through training in the arts and by producing family entertainment, all of which reflect Judeo-Christian values.

There are affiliates across the country training thousands of students a year. CYT is a nonprofit organization funded primarily through its tuition, ticket sales and outside contributions. Because CYT does not own facilities for classes or productions, the organization works through the local community, utilizing classrooms and stages in churches, schools and local theaters. CYT is not affiliated with a church body, and people of all faiths are welcome.

The Terre Haute location will be an extension of the Indianapolis affiliate, which currently offers six campuses throughout the city and suburbs.

CYT Terre Haute will offer a wide variety of activities throughout the year for ages 4-18. A week-long camp is planned for July 30 to Aug. 3 at the Eastside Church of Christ, at 4025 College Ave.

The camp is divided into two sections: Enchanted Camp (for youngest students) and Hairspray Camp. Break-out sessions will be offered on such topics as make-up, stage fighting and set design. Daily games, singing, dancing and acting make for fun-filled, educational days.

In addition to the summer camp, CYT Terre Haute will also offer weekly classes beginning in the fall. The classes will offer students the instruction needed to prepare them for the next step in the CYT process: a full-scale production. Plans are under way for a production of “School House Rock JR” in early 2013. In the fall students will be able to select from the following schedule: Drama 1, Voice 1, Backstage/Tech or Our Game/Wiggles (intro to musical theater class for ages 4-7). Registration will begin soon at www.cytindy.org.

Spots are still available for the upcoming Terre Haute camp. To register visit www.cytindy.org, click on “I love CYT Camps,” then click on “full list of camps” and scroll down to the bottom for the Terre Haute listing.
