Indiana State’s Masterworks Chorale seeking vocalists

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University’s Masterworks Chorale is looking for vocalists who love music and are interested in performing. The ensemble is conducted by Scott Buchanan, director of choral activities.

The 80 to 100-voice ensemble, which performs major choral works each semester, is comprised of ISU students, faculty and staff, as well as community members from the Wabash Valley.

This spring, the group will perform works by two highly acclaimed composers. Fern Hill is a work composed by American John Corigliano based on the poem by Dylan Thomas. Corigliano has been awarded an Academy Award, three Grammy Awards, and the Pulitzer Prize for his compositions. The second work, Sunrise Mass, is composed by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, a rising star in the realm of choral music composition. Though based on Ancient Liturgical texts, the piece is set in four movements that are given secular titles.

“This is an exciting pairing of compositions,” Buchanan said. “It’s been a while since I conducted this ensemble and I wanted to find music that our singers will enjoy learning and that our audience will enjoy hearing. This is will be an outstanding concert.”

Rehearsals will be conducted Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 150 of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts at Seventh and Chestnut streets.

Rehearsals are under way. A $30 activity fee will be assessed to cover musical expenses each semester, unless registered for ISU credit.
