First Congregational Church offering ‘Longest Night Service’

TERRE HAUTE — During this season, we often think of Santa and presents, nativity scenes and the birth of the Savior, as well as family gatherings and meals.

But for others in our community, this is not a time of joy. It is a time of grief over the loss of a loved one or a time of struggle with a sagging economic picture.

In this time of “comfort and joy,” First Congregational Church is attempting to focus as strongly on the comfort piece as it is the joy and is offering to the community the Longest Night Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of the church at 630 Ohio St.

“For many of us, this Christmas season is a bittersweet time of year,” said the Rev. Dawn Carlson. “It’s a time for remembering people and events that may have been part of our lives in the past, but are now changed or gone. The messages on TV and radio are all about getting together with family and friends and for some, that’s a constant reminder of something they may have lost — whether recently or long ago — or never had.”

Everyone is welcome to attend.
