Video: Get up close to vintage airplanes

TERRE HAUTE — Vintage World War II airplanes will touch down at Terre Haute’s airport for three days in early August and will be on display and open for passengers who want to pay the freight.

The Wings of Freedom Tour will bring rare bomber and fighter aircraft to Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field from Wednesday to Aug. 3.

Among the aircraft are a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, a Consolidated B-24 Liberator and a North American P-51 Mustang. The B-17 is one of only 10 in flying condition in the United States, the B-24J and full dual control P-51C Mustang are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the world, according to a press release.

The Wings of Freedom Tour is presented by the Collings Foundation, a nonprofit educational group devoted to organizing living history events that allow people to learn through direct participation.

Visitors can explore the aircraft inside and out for the costs of  $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. World War II Veterans can tour the aircraft at no cost. Discounted rates apply to school groups.

Visitors can also take flight on the vintage planes.

Wings of Freedom is scheduled to arrive at Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field at 2 p.m. on Aug. 1 and will be on display at the main ramp at the airport until the aircraft depart at noon on Aug. 3.

Ground tours and displays are set for 2 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 1; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 2; and 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 3.

The tour is in its 23rd year and visits an average of 110 cities in more than 35 states annually.

Wings of Freedom maintains a website at www.collingsfoundation.org.
