TERRE HAUTE — Remember making pirate hats or kites from newspapers?
A local not-for-profit organization is launching “Print to Apparel,” a competition for reusing newspaper to make wearable art.
Contestants are invited to use their imagination and to assist the environment by reusing the Sunday paper.
Entries are being sought from the general public — artists and amateurs alike, to submit works of “wearable art” that are created with newspaper.
The entries must meet the following criteria. Each piece submitted must:
• be made almost entirely of newspaper (at least 85 percent).
• have the capability to be displayed on a typical clothes hanger.
• be constructed in a way that it resembles some form of wearable art. (It doesn’t have to be constructed in a manner that will enable it to literally be worn.)
• For example, consider creating a jacket, a pair of pants, a simple shirt, a kimono, shorts, shoes (attached to a hanger for display purposes), a hat, scarf, gloves, etc. No more than two entries may be submitted per person.
Works of art may be fashioned using glue and other adhesives or by sewing newspaper pieces together. They may be embellished with paint, fabric, beads, buttons and other items that would make the work more interesting.
The idea is to reuse newspaper and to be creative in the endeavor. The project is all about having fun in the process of making art, and then, coming together for a dessert reception at 7 p.m. March 27 to celebrate the human imagination. There will be a $50 first prize and $25 People’s Choice prize awarded at 7:45. The reception is free and open to the public.
All who wish to participate need to send a name, e-mail, street address, phone number and $5 entry fee per piece to: First UUC, PO Box 3070, Terre Haute, IN 47803 by March 21. Drop off works of newspaper art to First Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 1875 Fruitridge Ave., on March 26, anytime from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
