Extension offers ‘Cool Season Vegetable Gardening’

University of Illinois Extension Clark Unit will offer “Cool Season Vegetable Gardening” at 7 p.m. Thursday via the U of I telenet system and local computer PowerPoint presentations, allowing live discussion between the instructor and gardeners throughout Illinois.

Cool Season Vegetable Gardening is the first installment in the year-long University of Illinois Extension Four Seasons Telenet series.

The Four-Seasons telenet will focus on techniques to maximize food production from the home garden by utilizing the spring and fall seasons to grow adapted, cool season crops. Selection of the best vegetables to grow, timing of plantings, and utilization of season extension methods will be the highlights of this informative gardening program.

“Consumers have an opportunity to significantly off-set the rising cost of feeding the family by growing their own vegetables” says Dr. Tony Bratsch, Horticulture Educator, University of Illinois. This telenet will provide an in-depth look at the benefits and methods of extending the gardening season, and how to move beyond “one-time” summer gardening. Cool season vegetable gardening greatly increases the quantity of produce that can be grown during the year when compared to summer gardening alone.

It provides a very high quality product for fresh eating, as well as for preservation by freezing and canning. “Think of fresh spinach, greens and hand-dug, sweet carrots during the winter months” says Bratsch. “By utilizing adapted varieties and modern environmental protection techniques, cool season gardening opens-up the potential of your gardening space, and will challenge you as a gardener to make local food production an integral part of your life”.

The fee for Thursday’s presentation is $5, payable at door at the Clark County Farm Bureau Building at 9 Trotter Lane in Martinsville, Ill.

To register in advance and to reserve a seat and packet of information call (217) 826-5422. There must be at least six people pre-registered to hold the class.
