Seminar series targets expectant moms

Maple Center to offer ‘Music for You and Your Baby’ this fall to help with relaxation and more

TERRE HAUTE — The Maple Center Inc., in collaboration with the Maternal Health Clinic, will be offering a new 6-week seminar series for expectant mothers titled “Music for You and Your Baby: A Seminar for Expectant Mothers.” Sharon R. Boyle, MT-BC, an associate professor of music therapy at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, will be facilitating the series this fall. She will be assisted by one of her students, Julia Lopez-Kaley, a junior music therapy major, as part of her fieldwork requirement in the program.

The purpose of this series is to teach expectant mothers about the function and role music can play in reducing stress, promoting relaxation and increasing focus for the participants, as well as illustrating how music can facilitate increased connection to the birth of a child and promote bonding between caretaker and newborn/infant.

Each session will include an experience with light stretching and music, as well as discussion about the use of music for reducing stress, promoting relaxation and increasing energy and focus. In addition, the use of songs and music to nurture and bond caretakers with newborns will be discussed and taught. In addition, each session will incorporate other experiences such as music-assisted relaxation and using music to provide support before, during and after childbirth.

The seminar will begin on Oct. 2 from 12:30-l :30 p.m. at the Maple Center. Classes will take place each Thursday (except Oct. 9) thereafter, for a total of six weeks. The final class will be on Nov. 13. This seminar series is free of charge. There is a maximum of 10 expectant mothers per group, so it is important to contact the Maple Center to reserve a spot.

Visit www.themaplecenter.org for more information about the weekly focus of each class. Contact Sharon Boyle for additional information at sboyle@smwc.edu or call (812) 535-5145.
