BOOKS: Big Read begins on March 2 with party

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Big Read begins on March 2 at the Vigo County Public Library with a Big Party beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” is this year’s selected text.

At the kick off party receive a free book; create a bookmark; guess the banned music (and, if you do, receive a free CD); and enjoy a Fahrenheit Fizz (or the drink of your choice) at the cash bar. The party will feature themed appetizers and music.

Also, participants are encouraged to bring the book they would “save from the fire,” and photographers will take their picture with the “saved” book. Costumes are optional, but participants can dress to match the book they bring.

Sherry Dailey and Lew Hackleman will entertain with a program, “Browsing Bradbury’s Brain.” Dailey is professor emerita at Indiana State University and received the President’s Medal in 1998. She is active in the Terre Haute community and has done numerous readings. Hackleman received the 1991 Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award at Indiana State University. He has frequently performed throughout the community, mostly at the Crossroads Repertory Theatre. This summer you will see him in “On Golden Pond.” Hackleman and Dailey first performed together at the library in 1994 in honor of Shakespeare’s birthday. On March 2 they will read and share their thoughts on Bradbury, including why a library was so essential to his writing that he said, “Anything that touches a library touches me.”

A special activity — the “Lit Lines” game — is planned for those who call themselves bibliophiles and anyone who consider themselves well-read or who love books.

First Financial Bank donated the books for this year’s program and free “Read It and Pass It On” copies can be found at Vigo County First Financial Bank locations. For a complete listing of all Wabash Valley Big Read events, pick up a brochure at West Branch or the Main Vigo County Public Library, or visit the library website at www.vigo.lib.in.us.

Admission to the Big Party is $5. Call Vigo County Public Library, Community Services at (812) 232-1113, ext. 2281 or 2282 to make your reservation.
