TERRE HAUTE — As part of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum’s Science Saturday program, Uwe Hansen, professor emeritus of physics at Indiana State University, will present “Acoustics: The Science of Music” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Through hands-on demonstrations, created by members of the Acoustical Society of America, participants will learn about the various science elements that play a role in creating music. One experiment will use sound waves to counteract gravity, another will allow a participant to find out the spectrum of his/her voice, one experiment will show what a wave looks like when it is made up of several waves, and another experiment will show participants the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves.
The “Acoustics: The Science of Music” demonstrations are free with museum admission. Museum admission is $3 for children ages 3-12, $4 for adults and $3 for seniors. Admission is free for children under 3 and for members of the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. The Terre Haute Children’s Museum is at 523 Wabash Ave. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Since it opened its doors in 1988, the Terre Haute Children’s Museum has been a fun and exciting destination for children and families, and museum’s mission is to “enrich our children’s lives through the exploration of science and technology.” The Terre Haute Children’s Museum is currently in a capital campaign for a new 26,000-square-foot facility, which will include a wide range of hands-on science and technology exhibits. To date, the Museum has received donations of $4.9 million toward a goal of $5.5 million. Sponsorship opportunities are still available, including naming area rights and exhibit sponsorships.
