Classic biblical epic on stage in Carmel

This holiday season, the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre in Carmel will celebrate the return of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” through Jan. 5. Presented for the first time at the Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts, “Joseph” will entertain the entire family.

“We’re thrilled to offer this must-see for the first time in our new home. Joseph is the perfect show for families to enjoy during the holidays,” said executive director Cheri Dick.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical adaptation of the well-known biblical tale of Joseph’s “coat of many colors” is both timely and timeless, including universal themes of sibling rivalry, regret and ultimate forgiveness.

Recent Butler University graduate Patrick Clements will star as Joseph in this season’s production.

“Joseph is a role I have always wanted to portray, and the show has been a family favorite for years,” Clements said.

The trials and triumphs of Jacob’s favorite son are told entirely in song, blending 1950s rock ’n’ roll, country western, calypso, pop and French chanson, including “Any Dream Will Do,” “Close Every Door” and “Go, Go, Go Joseph.”

“This production truly allows Civic to use all the space, sound and visual capabilities of the Tarkington. We’ve adapted Joseph to our venues in the past, so we’re excited to enhance the production and create something remarkable,” said producing director Michael Lasley.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $44 for adults, $34 for those 17 and under; family groups receive discount. For more information call 317-843-3800.

Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre is the largest of more than 70 community theaters in Indiana. It is also one of the 10 largest active community theaters in the United States and is considered to be one of the nation’s longest continuously operating community theaters. Civic is the principal resident company of the Tarkington, a 500-seat theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.
