TERRE HAUTE — Swope plans First Friday activities

Experience a new interpretation of an old favorite — be entertained by short theatrical readings inspired by works of art. Try delectable hors d’oeuvres, have a cocktail from the cash bar or simply enjoy the Swope collection and special exhibitions with friends. First Friday runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Swope, 25 S. Seventh St.

At 7 and 8 p.m. hear dramatic readings by Indiana State University playwright students inspired by works of art from the Swope Collection, under the direction of Merri Biechler, visiting professor of theater.

The exhibitions small architecture BIG LANDSCAPES (This exhibition features the largest fencePOCKET every created. Intrigued? You should be.) and Printshop/Screenprint will also be open and on view for those who haven’t yet had a chance to experience them.

Swope First Fridays are sponsored by Union Hospital and UAP Clinic and are free.

There are also exhibitions opening at the Swope’s neighbors, Gopalan and Halcyon galleries.

CLINTON

Jacobi Wichita to perform Wednesday

With a mix of Latin, hip hop and rock sounds, the nationally touring band Jacobi Wichita will perform Wednesday in the Old High School at Clinton.

Songs by the five-member group based in Norwalk, Conn., are popular on iTunes. Their current tour includes shows in Asbury Park, N.J., Chicago, and Wisconsin, along with Clinton.

The show is scheduled 7 to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Old High School on Blackman Street. Tickets are $5, and can be purchased by contacting Cody Scott by e-mail at csmb21@hotmail.com or by phone at (812) 552-6788.

TH woman receives art award at EIU

The Eastern Illinois University Art Department has announced the recipients of the 2010 Undergraduate All-Student Show awards and the 2010 Art Department awards and scholarships. The recipients were recognized at an awards reception Feb. 28 at the Tarble Arts Center on the EIU campus.

A juror panel selected the exhibition award winners. Christina Doti of Terre Haute received an Honorable Mention award for “Pro/Con Wind Energy,” computer animation.

The exhibition continues through March 28 in Tarble’s main galleries and eGallery.

Fishing pro to visit Texas Roadhouse

Join professional fisherman Mike DelVisco at 6 p.m. March 14 at Terre Haute’s Texas Roadhouse, 2941 S. Third St., as he shares fishing tips, answers questions and signs autographs. Guests can see the Bassmaster’s state-of-the-art Phoenix Bass Boat and truck.

Guests can also register to win a fishing prize package which includes a Tica fishing rod and reel, a selection of Yamamoto baits, lures from Secret Weapon and Pro Swimbaits, Yo-Zuri hybrid fishing line, two Mike DelVisco instructional videos, and other items valued at more than $200.

DelVisco, a full-time time professional angler on the Bassmaster Tour and PAA Tour, is a 2007 and 2008 Grand Slam and 2009 Bassmaster Series National Championship qualifier. In addition to competing, Mike conducts seminars around the country at many popular sport shows and is a former Bassmaster University instructor. His Bass Bytes vignettes can be seen via Video-on-Demand segments on the popular Sportskool network available to more than 25 million viewers.

Cloth, fiber artist to give demonstration

Brenda Ramponi, cloth and fiber artist, will be demonstrating her unique talents at 6 p.m. Thursday before the regularly scheduled meeting of the Wabash Valley Art Guild. It will be downstairs at the Vigo County Public Library.

Ramponi emphasizes that the inspiration for her art comes from her spirituality. She explains that her art is an outgrowth of her life experiences, where she has spent years counseling those who have come to her for spiritual guidance. Her art continues to be enriched by people who are also enriched by her artistic expression.

Ramponi has been featured in Art Doll Quarterly magazine and was the subject of a video about unknown female American artists. For the program, she invites those attending to bring their own scraps of cloth and she will help develop ideas of how they could use them. Ramponi can be reached at (812) 230-3271.

Zoomtown 5K Covered Bridge Run/Walk set

The fourth annual Zoomtown 5K Covered Bridge Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, May 15. Registration starts at 7 a.m., the kids run/walk is at 7:45 a.m. and the adult run/walk race time is 8 a.m. Registration for the 5K run/walk is $20 in advance, $22 after April 30. Fun-run registration for children 10 and under is $10 in advance, $12 after April 30.

Trophies will be given for first-place overall male and female in the run and first-place overall male and female in the walk. Medals will be given for the top three in each age group in the run and in the walk. Participation ribbons will be given for those taking part in the fun-run/walk. T-shirts are guaranteed to pre-registered racers; late registration T-shirts will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The race will take place at 4338 W. 40N and U.S. 36, four miles east of Montezuma and five miles West of Rockville.

Homemakers sponsor ‘Dining to Donate’

The Vigo County Extension Homemakers are sponsoring a “Dining to Donate” by Applebee’s of Terre Haute on March 15. Funds will be used for premiums for the Home and Family Arts Open Class Department at the 2010 Vigo County Fair. Flyers must be presented before dining at Applebee’s and may be picked up at the Purdue Extension  Service-Vigo County Office at 275 Ohio St. in Terre Haute, from an Extension Homemaker member or online at www.ces.purdue.edu/vigo.

ROBINSON, ILL.

College, Fox 38 plan ‘American Idol’ party

Lincoln Trail College and WFXW Fox 38 in Terre Haute are rolling out the blue carpet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 16 for an “American Idol” finale party in the LTC Sports Center.

People of all ages are invited to enjoy a night of free entertainment. Events for the evening include Monicals pizza for the first 200 attendees; “American Idol” program being shown on a 20-foot screen in the gym; and various giveaways throughout the evening, including a Wii game system and “American Idol Encore II” for the Wii (donated by Walmart), as well as LTC gear.

The highlight of the evening will be an “American Idol” Wii competition that will net one lucky winner two tickets to the “American Idol” finale in May in Hollywood. In addition to show tickets, the prize package includes flight and hotel for two provided by Travel Network in Terre Haute and Fun Jet Vacations.

River City announces Spring Exhibition

The second annual River City Art Association, Inc. Spring Exhibition is slated for April 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Honey Creek Mall. Any artist over the age of 18 may enter. Categories are 2D, 3D, Photography and Mixed Media/ Other. Awards will be given for Best of Show and first and second place for each category. River City Art Association completed its first year Dec. 31 with 65 members. 2010 has a full schedule of events beginning with an exhibition at the Vigo County Public Library in March celebrating the “Big Read,” the Spring Exhibition at Honey Creek Mall in April, the Mushroom Festival April 24-25 in Mansfield, an exhibition at the Raven Gallery the month of June, and many more.
