Terre Haute native on her book: It’s a ‘Bible study with a twist’

TERRE HAUTE — “Refreshing Bible study with a twist” is how Terre Haute native Mary Ann (Shouse) Crum describes her recently released book, “Live. Learn. Laugh! Stories and Studies That Reveal God’s Amazing Heart” (Xulon Press, 2011).

That “twist,” she explained, is humor.

Crum said she hopes to entertain, encourage, inspire and challenge readers with this sampling of 36 humorous newspaper columns she has written over the past 10 years for the Greenwood (S.C.) Index-Journal. The book also includes group discussion questions and in-depth Bible study questions at the end of each chapter, making it suitable for use in Sunday School classes and Bible study groups.

This is Crum’s second book. Her first, “A Giggle Goes a Long Way,” was published by Baker Books in 1986.

Crum said her newspaper column and this book are built on her belief that “every day is loaded with opportunities to learn more about the amazing character and ways of God.”

“I want my readers to feel as if they are sitting on my front porch with me, talking about the nitty-gritty, mundane, funny and poignant stuff of our lives and looking for God and His eternal truths in those things,” she said.

Crum is the daughter of Jane and the late Cletis Shouse, longtime residents of Terre Haute. She graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School in 1975, attended Auburn University and went on to earn a degree in journalism from the University of Louisville. Her husband, Joe, is a 1975 graduate of Rose-Hulman.

Crum has lived in Greenwood, S.C., since 1980 and in that time has worked as a newspaper reporter and columnist, university public relations writer, tennis coach, church youth director, children’s home houseparent, and women’s ministry director.

“Live. Learn. Laugh!” is available at the Open Door Christian Bookstore in Terre Haute, or can be ordered online through xulonpress.com/bookstore, amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com and booksamillion.com. It will also soon be released as an eBook.
