The Indiana State University theater department opens the contemporary drama “Norway” on Wednesday in the New Theater, 536 N. Seventh St.
This riveting and compelling mystery, directed by associate professor Julie Dixon, follows the character Brent, a young gay man who travels the country, lecturing and playing reinventions of Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata. Ten years ago in Lewiston, Idaho, Brent and Andy were best friends. Now Brent travels from town to town, Andy secretly follows. But when Andy commits suicide by freezing to death in a Walmart parking lot, his dad is left to unravel the mystery of why.
“Norway” was written by playwright Samuel D. Hunter, a rising star in the American theater whose plays saw five different productions across the country last year. The work addresses many challenging issues, including suicide, bullying, Christian thought, being gay in a small town, and the pull of familial love and loyalty against the love of a friend in the fragile teenage years.
The members of the three-person cast includes junior theater major Joe Wagner, who plays Brent and was last seen as Saturninus in the 2011 SpringStage production of Titus Andronicus; sophomore theater major Charles Adams who plays Mark and was Creon in Antigone earlier this semester, and senior Jimi Bothwell, who plays Andy, appeared last spring as Lucius in Titus Andronicus.
Department of theater faculty and staff designed the set (Ann Warren), costumes (Sherry McFadden), lights (Michael Jackson) and media (Chris Berchild). Student designers include Natalie Cappucci, who designed sound and Brian Kogut, who designed properties.
The show runs through Nov. 19. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. in the New Theater. The show runs approximately 90 minutes with one intermission.
Due to subject matter, this show is for mature audiences only.
Tickets are $7 for the general public and free to any student with a student ID.
