TERRE HAUTE — FEATURE EVENT

Today

Community Band performance to honor veterans

The Jackson Township Community Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will perform today to observe and celebrate Veterans Day.

The first concert takes place inside the Clay County Courthouse at 10 a.m. and precedes the annual ceremony staged by local veterans organizations.

On Nov. 11, 1918, the 3 year old JTCB assembled at the very same courthouse to play a concert recognizing the end of The Great War with the Germans signing an armistice ending hostilities. The Great War was renamed World War I after the start of World War II.

Among music played that day was George M. Cohan’s war song, “Over There!” The JTCB plays that very same arrangement each Nov. 11.

In 1954, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day honoring American military veterans of all wars.

Military band music by notables such as Lt. Cmdr. John Philip Sousa, Fred Jewell, Henry Fillmore and Karl L. King will echo throughout the grandiose Clay County Courthouse as the now 96 year old JTCB sounds off for its longest enduring musical engagement.

Van Buren School will host the JTCB for a concert presented to the students and staff and invited veterans that afternoon at 1 p.m.

This is Huber’s 44th continuous Veterans Day concert at the courthouse. Back in 1968, there were still many Clay County World War I veterans proudly recalling their days in the trenches “Over There” as former director, the late Carl Kumpf, led the band through several of the same marches the band has programmed for this year’s event.
