Neverly Brothers bring rock ’n’ roll to Opry April 21

TERRE HAUTE — Fasten your seatbelts for a guided musical tour through rock ’n’ roll history this weekend at the Boot City Opry.

Dressed in period-perfect matching suits from each era, The Neverly Brothers’ song sequence and selection, accompanied by narrative historical footnotes, will illustrate how the music and energy of 1950s American rockabilly, rock ’n’ roll and rhythm and blues pioneers set the stage for and influenced the adventurous young bands of the 1964 British Invasion.

The Neverly Brothers are not an “oldies cover band,” nor are they a tribute act. They are a unique national touring retro-rock revue. The performance is said to leave audience members singing and dancing.

Their repertoire consists of show-stopping renditions of early hits by Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five and many other artists who shaped rock ’n’ roll from 1955 through 1965.

The band was formed in June 2003 in Chicago. Members include:

n Kevin Giragosian (vocals, guitar, harmonica), a prominent figure on the Chicago live music circuit for more than 20 years. His signature “electrified” acoustic guitar sound he developed for the act has also become a highlight and integral part of their sound. In addition to being a talented vocalist and guitarist, on stage Giragosian fronts the band. By sprinkling the show with insightful bits of music trivia and history between songs, he adds more meaning and relevance to the music.

n Kegham Giragosian (drums, vocals) started his musical career in the early 1990s. He stands, not sits, behind a minimalist drum kit — consisting of only a bass drum and a snare drum — and swings his arms in windmill circles beating the snare drum with brushes, not sticks. He also sings lead on a number of songs.

n Craig Gigstad (vocals, upright bass fiddle) has been a veteran of the Chicago music scene for more than 20 years — touring and performing with a variety of local acts and national recording artists. He is equally versatile as a vocalist and an instrumentalist.

See The Neverly Brothers at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Boot City Opry, south of Terre Haute on U.S. 41. Tickets are $15.
