35th Strassenfest opens April 26

TERRE HAUTE — The 35th Strassenfest, the annual German-American spring street festival sponsored by the German Oberlandler Club, opens April 26 to bring German culture to downtown Terre Haute. Admission is free.

This three-day event takes place in the tent-covered Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace at Ninth and Cherry streets. The Jay Fox Bavarian Showtime Band from Fort Wayne and the Alpen echos from Cincinnati will alternate on stage to provide continuous music for listening and dancing each day from 4 p.m. to midnight.

Club members serve German and American foods and drinks beginning at 11 a.m. April 26 and April 27, and at 4 p.m. April 28. Festival guests can enjoy bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, schnitzels, chicken and desserts. Take-outs are available.

The German Oberlandler Club, a volunteer group, was organized in 1967 to preserve German culture in the Wabash Valley.

Festival proceeds help support the club’s scholarship program, youth soccer and other community projects.
