‘Photography by Bob Riseling & Jim McMullen’ at Bicentennial Art Center

TERRE HAUTE — The Bicentennial Art Center in Paris, Ill., invites the public to “Photography by Bob Riseling and Jim McMullen.” The exhibit continues through Sept. 28.

McMullen is a retired scientist, teacher, consultant and a self-taught photographer from Terre Haute. He purchased his first single-lens reflex camera more than 40 years ago to photograph his new son. He soon equipped a darkroom and started developing his own film and enlarging and printing his photographs. Several cameras later he switched from film to digital and hasn’t looked back. He now shoots with a digital single lens reflex camera, uploads his images to a laptop computer, edits them and then prints them with a large-format printer. He has photographed many interesting subjects, including landscapes, flowers, wildlife, antique vehicles, barns, bridges and other subjects that present themselves as he travels the backroads, backstreets and alleys of the country.

Riseling is a freelance photographer who works out of his home in Effingham, Ill. He became interested in photography while a senior in high school, and majored in photography at Southern Illinois University. After retiring from his job, he returned to his photographic interest. Working in the digital format has allowed him to approach his photography on an intuitive level. He has found that there are a seemingly endless number of ways to work with his images in the digital world. Digital technology has allowed him to challenge long held ideas and approach his subject matter in a much less restrained manner. Riseling mainly photographs common objects and then manipulates them into varying degrees of abstraction, presenting depictions of real objects in thought provoking ways. His hope is to engage the viewer, pique their curiosity and get them involved in his photographs.

Both McMullen and Riseling have selected more than 60 photographs that fill the galleries at the Art Center.

Although they have different photographic styles, their work compliments each other. The Art Center is at 132 S. Central Ave., in Paris.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, or by appointment. Admission is free.
