Jackson Township Band to perform at Center Point festival

CENTER POINT — The Jackson Township Community Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will appear in concert at 6 p.m. Saturday in Center Point.

The 30 member JTCB is a regular at the annual Center Point Fall Festival.

The JTCB was established as a farm boys’ band at the McNutt Farm just south of Hoosierville in 1915. J. Gus Davis was the first conductor and trained the boys on the various wind and percussion instruments.

Longtime conductor Carl Kumpf was a member of the JTCB for more than 75 years and led the band for nearly 60 years.

The JTCB’s longest continuous event is the Veterans’ Day ceremony staged at the Clay County Courthouse starting with the Armistice on Nov. 11, 1918.

The JTCB was on call for all sorts of patriotic events during World War II and traveled throughout the United States with the American Legion during the last half of the 20th century playing every major national convention of the veterans’ organization.

Well known for the preservation and performance of traditional American concert band music, the JTCB owns and houses an enormous collection of original compositions with emphasis on the Indiana March King Fred Jewell. In 1968, former Brazilian Marvin Workman composed “JTCB on Parade” for the band with its upbeat Dixieland style of tunes dear to the State of Indiana.

The JTCB owns and maintains its home, the Band Cabin, built by the band, on Melody Lake north of Brazil. The Center Point concert will offer patriotic aires, waltzes, polkas, overtures and favorite marches.
