Crosley Radio Players to perform Halloween dinner theater show

PARIS, ILL. — The Crosley Radio Players will perform a Halloween dinner theater show Sunday at Tuscany Restaurant in Paris, Ill.

The Players will be featuring episodes of “Inner Sanctum,” “Command Performance” and “Fibber McGee and Molly.” Many of the sound effects used will be generated live, just as they were when the shows were on the radio.

Cost is $17 and includes a complete buffet dinner with drink and dessert and the 80-minute show. Reservations are strongly suggested; seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Tuscany in Paris, or by calling 217-466-1610. Buffet service begins at 5 p.m. CDT with the show at 6:15.

“Inner Sanctum,” which aired from 1941 until 1952, combined mystery, terror and suspense with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to keep audiences spellbound. Many well-known actors of the day worked on the show, including Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and Burgess Meredith.

In keeping with the holiday, The Crosley Players will be recreating “The Vengeful Corpse.” “Command Performance,” a musical-variety show aimed at American G.I.s stationed around the world, was beamed from Hollywood via short-wave radio on Armed Forces Radio Network. It was broadcast from 1942 until 1949, and was hosted each week by a famous entertainer, such as Bob Hope or band leader Kay Kyser.

“Fibber McGee and Molly,” which ran for 24 years on the NBC Radio Network, starred real husband and wife Jim and Marian Jordan in the title roles. Many long-running characters, such as Wallace Wimple, who was portrayed by Terre Haute native Bill Thompson, and equally long-running gags, such as Fibber’s closet, delighted radio audiences through the depression and two wars.

Tuscany is at 1218 N. Main St. in Paris.
