Bicentennial Art Center exhibit contains oil paintings on canvas

TERRE HAUTE — The Bicentennial Art Center in Paris, Ill., announces its newest exhibition, “Works by Alice Baber.”

This exhibit contains oil paintings on canvas by Alice Baber from the art center’s permanent collection.

Baber was born in central Illinois in 1928. She was very imaginative, and had a penchant for poetry, which is evident in the titles of her works. She translated her love of metaphor into visual form.

Baber studied art at universities in Illinois, and later in France, and then moved to New York City. While living in New York, she discovered the difficulties of being a woman artist, and she then dedicated her life to the cause of women in the arts. By 1966 she had found her individual style and gained increasing acceptance by museums throughout the world.

Baber’s paintings were featured in many solo exhibitions as well as group exhibitions all over the United States and throughout the world. In 1976 she began to paint in watercolors. The watercolor medium proved well suited to her search for ever greater light and transparency in her work. The medium also was less physically demanding than oil on canvas, and the onset of her terminal illness was already taking its toll on her health.

Baber died in October 1982 after a long struggle with cancer. At that time the Bicentennial Art Center acquired a large number of her paintings which are the nucleus of its permanent collection.

Baber’s paintings will be on display through Feb. 17. The Art Center is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, or call (217) 466-8130 for an appointment.
