St. Mary-of-the-Woods College to present ‘The Sound of Music’

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — This spring, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College comes alive with the sound of music as the Department of Music and Theatre presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical “The Sound of Music” from March 1-4.

“The Sound of Music” is one of Broadway’s most popular musicals. The show was a Broadway hit in 1959, but most audiences will remember the 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews, who won five Academy Awards.

Many of the songs from the play have become classics, including “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “Do Ri Me” and “The Sound of Music.”

Directed by SMWC theater professor Sharon Ammen, this performance will delight audiences from start to finish. Ammen previously directed the musicals “Urinetown” and “Quilters” at the college and co-wrote the Crossroads Repertory Theatre summer musical “The Velveteen Rabbit.”

The college received an Arts Illiana grant to present a panel discussion on the portrayal of anti-Semitism in the play following the performance March 2.

In addition to student actors, the college welcomes professional actor Brandon Wentz in the role of Captain Georg von Trap and musical director Doris Pell, the pianist for the Terre Haute Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra.

Tyler Hutcheson, SMWC’s technical director, will design the set and David DelColetti, emeriti associate professor of theater at Indiana State University, is the lighting director.

Performances will be in Cecilian Auditorium on the SMWC campus and are as follows:

• March 1 at 7 p.m.

• March 2 at 8 p.m. — reception and panel discussions to follow

• March 3 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

• March 4 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 10-16 and senior citizens. Area college students with a valid ID and children under 10 are free. Call (812) 535-6211 for more information.
