TERRE HAUTE —
Spiders have eight legs. The solar system has eight planets (now that Pluto’s been booted). Demolition derby competitors sometimes drive in a figure of eight.
And now, J.T. Corenflos has eight nominations for Top Guitarist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.
The 46-year-old Terre Haute native is one of five nominees for the 2010 ACM Awards. The “on-camera” awards, primarily for country music’s top singers, will be announced during a live CBS broadcast from Las Vegas on April 18. The “off-camera” awards, including the Top Guitarist, will be revealed prior to that show.
Corenflos is joined by four other guitarists, who work as “session musicians” on recordings by high-profile Nashville artists. The other Top Guitarist nominees are Pat Buchannan, Kenny Greenberg, Brent Mason and Bryan Sutton.
Corenflos has been nominated every year since 2002, but has yet to win. Last year, Tom Bukovac received the award.
Under ACM rules, the winner from the previous year is ineligible for a nomination in the following year. The voters for Top Guitarist are ACM members who are artists and entertainers, musicians and bandleaders, and producers and engineers. Those voters consider, among other things, a guitarist’s contributions to Top 20 songs or albums appearing on the Billboard Hot Country charts between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009. A guitarist’s work on a song released in 2008 that peaks on the charts in 2009 can also be considered.
Despite that string of ACM near-misses, Corenflos has racked up plenty of album credits, especially during the past two years. His guitar work was featured on several popular CDs in 2009, including “No. 1s … and Then Some” by Brooks and Dunn, “Doin’ My Thing” by Luke Bryan, “Feel That Fire” by Dierks Bentley, and “Sounds Like Life” by Darryl Worley, among others.
Among the early 2010 releases, Gretchen Wilson’s “I Got Your Country Right Here” disc also features Corenflos on electric guitar. His playing will also be found on upcoming CDs by Joe Nichols and Kellie Pickler.
Corenflos has worked as a Nashville session and touring guitarist since moving to Music City at age 18, right after graduating from Terre Haute North Vigo High School in 1982.
