• Escape to Parke County for the Covered Bridge Christmas celebration. Shoppers can skip the crowded malls for old fashioned gifts and a celebration of the holiday season in Mansfield Village.
The annual festival is staged over two weekends: this weekend, beginning today through Sunday and Dec. 4 to 6. Hours for the event are 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The village shops will be open with delicious foods available both weekends. More than 30 booths will be in the Red Barn downtown with other vendors set up throughout town. Christmas carolers will be strolling the streets. It’s a magical time of year as thousands of lights decorate the buildings in the tiny village located on the banks of Big Raccoon Creek.
Santa will be available for pictures from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights and 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday (on the second weekend only). Santa’s Secret Shop will be open during the entire festival for kids to shop for reasonably priced gifts for parents, siblings and other members of the family. A Christmas chocolate walk will begin at the Mansfield Village Welcome Center downtown both weekends. The chocolate walk is a free event for all children 12 and under.
Mansfield is in southern Parke County, six miles south of U.S. 36, just east of Indiana 59.
• Shops will be open and full of gifts during the Bridgeton Country Christmas this weekend and next. Shop the vendors in the 1878 Barn, Collom’s General Store, the North Pole Barn, and the Bridgeton Country Store. Many vendors are returning from the Covered Bridge Festival. The kids will want to visit Santa in the 1822 Case Log Cabin from 1 to 3 p.m. both Saturdays. Enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner in the Bridgeton Country Store or try one of the many other food choices available in town. Take a carriage ride or stroll through the Historic District and the Bridgeton Covered Bridge. Enjoy the lights and Christmas decorations and listen to Christmas carolers from local churches and singing groups.
The event will be in full swing from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Dec. 4 and 5 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday and Dec. 6.
Don’t forget to take a scenic drive through hills and valleys in Parke County. Bridgeton is located in Southern Parke County, 9 miles south of Rockville, or take Indiana 59 north from Brazil to the green Bridgeton highway sign, or travel east of Rosedale six miles and follow the signs to Bridgeton.
There’s no admission, and parking is free.
