Jackson Township Band to perform Veterans Day concert

BRAZIL — The Jackson Township Community Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will perform at the Clay County Courthouse on Veterans Day.

The concert will begin at 10:15 a.m. in the rotunda of the courthouse.

On a cold Nov. 11, 1918, members of the community band hastily assembled at the courthouse to celebrate the Armistice, the surrender document signed by the Germans.

For every Armistice Day, later known as Veterans Day (as of 1954), the band has performed to honor not only the veterans of World War I, but all veterans of American history.

It is the band’s longest standing musical engagement.

Keeping with the traditions started in 1918, the band will perform “Over There!” by George M. Cohan which became the nation’s rallying song during the Great War, as World War I was called at the time.

The band also will play marches by John Philip Sousa. Following the concert, members of Clay County veterans organizations will present colors and the annual ceremony.
