'Celtic Crossroads' fills cancellation

A spring show by the Celtic instrumentalist and dancers of “Celtic Crossroads” has been added to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Performing Arts Series schedule to replace the cancellation of The StepCrew's show on November 13 at the Hatfield Hall Theater.

An injury to a primary performer for StepCrew has forced the group to cancel all of its late fall shows, according to Bunny Nash, Rose-Hulman's director of performing arts.

“The circumstances for this cancellation are beyond our control,” Nash noted. “This is the first time since the performing arts series has been in Hatfield Hall that we have had to cancel a concert. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.”

Celtic Crossroads will present a show at Rose-Hulman on March 28. The group of seven talented multi-instrumentalists and two dancers from Ireland will present the best of Irish music and dance, with a wonderful fusion of musical genres such as eastern European Gypsy, North American Bluegrass, world classical and jazz, and the various forms of Celtic music. The group will be taping a Public Broadcasting System special before coming to Rose-Hulman in March.

Persons having tickets for The StepCrew's show can exchange their tickets for the Celtic Crossroads show or receive a full refund by contacting the Hatfield Hall ticket office at (812) 877-8544 or visiting any weekday from 1 to 5 p.m.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods

Exhibit features seniors’ work

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Art Gallery’s newest exhibition features the work of seniors Perla Mateo-Lujan and Molly Migliaccio.

The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 6.

Mateo-Lujan will graduate in December with a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design. A transfer student from Ivy Tech Community College, Columbus, she is from Ellettsville.

Mateo-Lujan says most of her pieces in the exhibit are commercial work, including logos, posters and advertisements, but there are a few pieces in the exhibit that have special meaning for her.

“One is a panorama photograph of McCormick’s Creek that I took while at my last college,” she said. “My friends and I would always love hiking through the trails and for one of my assignments for Imaging class was that we needed to capture the beauty of a special area through a panoramic photo. I went to McCormick’s Creek around 5 a.m. when it was still somewhat foggy, and it had just rained so the green was really vibrant. All I wanted to do was capture the beauty of nature, and I hope I achieved it through my picture.”

Migliaccio, who is from Phoenix, also will graduate in December with a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design and an associate’s degree in equine studies. Her exhibit is titled “A Desert Wind Between Horse’s Ears.”

The SMWC Art Gallery is in Hulman Hall, Room 132. Admission is free. Regular gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact Rebecca Mollenhauer, gallery director, by telephone at (812) 535-5265 or by e-mail at artgallery@smwc.edu for more information.
