Grammy Award nominees Dailey & Vincent coming to TH

TERRE HAUTE — Even though their roots are deep into bluegrass, don’t call Dailey and Vincent a bluegrass group. There’s also part gospel, country and rock ’n’ roll in this dynamic duo that has been on quite a roll since coming together in the early 2000s.

“We really don’t want people to put us in a box. We’re not ‘just another bluegrass group,’” Darrin Vincent recently told the Mansfield (Ohio) News Journal. “We’ll do Southern gospel, duets, a cappella numbers — and some comedy. … We play off the crowd. If they seem to really go one way, we’ll go that route.”

This wholesome family style of entertainment is coming to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Hatfield Hall Theater for a 7:30 p.m. show Jan. 27. Tickets range from $18 to $22 for adults and are $15 for students and youths.

In less than a decade, Dailey and Vincent has become one of the top duos in bluegrass and gospel music. All four of the group’s albums have made at least one Billboard albums chart.

Last year came the first Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Then, there are the 11 awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association, including Vocal Group of the Year for three straight years (2008-10), and the 2011 Best Bluegrass Band and Album of the Year awards by Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America.

And, Dailey and Vincent’s fame continues to grow through their popular CD released exclusively for Cracker Barrel restaurants, including the latest all-gospel album.

Jamie Dailey (guitar, bass, lead and harmony vocals) has recorded with Dolly Parton and Rhonda Vincent, appeared on five Gaither Homecoming DVDs, and was a guest on Ricky Skaggs’ Grammy-winning Brand New Strings album. He formerly was lead singer and bass player for Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.

Vincent (mandolin, bass, guitar, lead and harmony vocals) started singing at age 3 and playing music at age 6 as part of his family band, The Sally Mountain Show, along with sister Rhonda Vincent. He was a member of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder for 10 years; performed on Grammy-winning albums by Parton and Jimmy Sturr; and performed with such artists as Nora Jones, Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs, Bruce Hornsby, Vince Gill, John Hartford and Keith Urban.

“(Dailey and Vincent) have a great sound,” stated Parton in a supporting statement in the duo’s media materials. “Not since the Louvin Brothers has music touched me this deep. I expect them to go all the way to the top and stay there.”

Hornsby added: “Dailey and Vincent make my ear hairs curl and my toes curl. Their name is on the lips of everyone in the know, as far as I’m concerned.”

Dailey and Vincent’s supporting cast features Christian Davis (bass vocals, guitar), Joe Dean Jr. (banjo, guitar, bass vocals), Jeff Parker (mandolin, guitar, harmony vocals) and Jesse Stockman (fiddle).
