Encounter Youth Choir in town

TERRE HAUTE — The Encounter Youth Choir from Alton, Ill., will be visiting Terre Haute, to perform at Indiana State University and Memorial United Methodist Church.

Encounter, celebrating its 40th season, will perform at Indiana State University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at University Hall Theater.

The group will also perform at Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar St., on Sunday in conjunction with the 10 a.m. service. Both performances are free and open to the public.

Encounter is a group of Christian youth from ninth through 12th grades that represents more than 32 churches in the Alton.

The choir consists of 123 youth and 15 adult sponsors. Students from any denomination are welcome.

The group begins rehearsing in January, with the first performance on Easter Sunday at Alton’s Main Street United Methodist Church, the sponsor church.

Terre Haute is the last stop on Encounter’s 10-day tour, which included stops in Williamsburg, Va., and Washington, D.C., where the group performed and provided service to those communities.
