TERRE HAUTE —
The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra will perform its season opener at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Indiana State University’s Tilson Auditorium.
The concert will feature Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Mozart Concerto No. 21 and Steven Karidoyanes’ Dances.
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is dramatic and powerful. Karidoyanes’ Café Neon: Fantasy on Greek Songs and Dances includes exciting, lively songs and dances that are Greek in origin. This might remind people of the music from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” The rhythm is a funky meter with added beats that are characteristic of Greek dance. The Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 will be familiar to absolutely everyone. It’s heard in numerous movies, commercials and other media.
Guest artist for the evening, pianist John Noel, will be featured on the Mozart Concerto. Noel is from North Carolina and has played solo and chamber music in Germany, Italy and Jordan. He performed with the North Carolina Symphony on two occasions last season and he maintains a private teaching studio in Raleigh.

A free “Family Time” concert will be presented from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday during dress rehearsal at Tilson.

Annette Funicello, Mouseketeer and film star, dies
NEW YORK — Annette Funicello, who became a child star as a perky, cute-as-a-button Mouseketeer on “The Mickey Mouse Club” in the 1950s, then teamed up with Frankie Avalon in a string of ‘60s fun-in-the-sun movies with titles like “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “Bikini Beach,” died today. She was 70.
