Kayak Paddlefest on Lake Kickapoo

The Friends of Shakamak are once again sponsoring a free kayak Paddlefest on Oct. 6. Lake Kickapoo in Shakamak State Park offers a fantastic location for this quiet activity that gives people the opportunity to learn how to kayak on flat water from expert instructors. The park will provide the kayaks, life preservers and paddles.

The fun all starts at the boat docks. Those interested should meet at noon and be ready to paddle. Safety guidelines, technique and courtesy to other paddlers will be discussed prior to the actual launch. Paddlers will then get on the water for first-hand experience in paddling and maneuvering a kayak across flat water. The day is intended to introduce new participants to the sport, or offer the opportunity to those with limited kayaking experience the chance to simply enjoy time on the water.

The Friends of Shakamak will provide instruction, assistance and refreshments. Participants are encouraged to wear proper clothing for the event. Good water shoes, a hat and clothing that may get wet are all suggested. Kayaks provided by the park seat the paddler on the kayak, not in the kayak. This means that portions of the paddler may get wet during the paddling, so a change of clothing may be needed.
