The 92nd Annual Parke County Fair opens Saturday for its eight-day run, with several new attractions and special events planned.
New to the local fair is Wabash Valley Amusements, opening its carnival rides Tuesday through July 28. Bracelets will be $20 Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights, with Wednesday being “Buddy Night,” featuring two bracelets for $25 and Discount Bracelet night Saturday for $15.
One new event this year is Thursday night’s Outhouse Races at 8 p.m. The outhouse will be provided. Each team must consist of three people. Two contestants will push the outhouse and one contestant will ride in the outhouse and conduct the various pit-stops along the way. The entry fee is $20 per team. Proceeds from the event will go to the Parke County Fair Board and the Parke County Food Pantry. The contest is open to all ages.
Also new will be Friday night’s Truck Tug-of-War at 7 p.m. The Demolition Derby has been shifted to Saturday night’s schedule, starting at 5 p.m. The carnival’s discount bracelet night will open at 6 p.m., and the Bridgeton Crossroads Band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. A fireworks show will wrap up the fair at 10 p.m.
Other highlights of fair week include the All-American Little Miss and Mister Contest at 4 p.m. Saturday, sponsored by the Parke County Chamber of Commerce. The 4-H Building and Grounds Association will sponsor a Jonah Fish Fry from 4 to 8 p.m., with the 51st Annual Parke County Fair Queen Pageant at 7 p.m. in the Show Pavilion.
Two refrigeration trucks will be used to provide “air conditioning” for the Show Pavilion for this year’s fair. Sunday’s special events in the Pavilion include the 4-H Fashion Revue at 5 p.m. at the Parke County Ministerial Association’s Vesper Service and Gospel Sing at 7 p.m., featuring the Rockville Christian Church Worship Band and special guests.
The Parke County 4-H Pork tent will be open Monday through Saturday, and Monday night will feature the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League and Open Local Tractor Pull at 7 p.m. in the grandstands, and the Truck and Antique Tractor Pull will take to the dirt Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Talent Show will start at 7:30 in the Show Pavilion.
Wednesday will feature two free magic shows by Daniel Lusk in the Show Pavilion at 3:30 and 8 p.m., with the 10 Year 4-H Member recognition and presentation of Exhibit Hall awards at 6 p.m. in the Show Pavilion.
The Fair Parade will step off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday with the theme “The Year of the Dairy Cow,” followed by the 4-H Master Showmanship contest in the Show Pavilion and the Outhouse Races at 8 p.m. Friday night will feature the 4-H Livestock Auction at 6:30 p.m. and the Truck Tug-of-War at 7 p.m.
The 4-H Dog Show has been moved from the first Saturday of the fair until the last, July 28, beginning at 10 a.m. The Wright Implement Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull will begin at 3 p.m., with the Demolition Derby at 5 and Discount Bracelet Night at 6 p.m. The Bridgeton Crossroads Band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. with a fireworks show at 10 p.m.
