The Indiana State University Department of Theater is gearing up for its first shows of the 2012-2013 season. This year’s Fallstage shows include “Circle Mirror Transformation,” written by Annie Baker and directed by Senior Theater Major Tiara Watkins, and “Nightfall with Edgar Allen Poe,” written by Eric Coble and directed by Professor Julie Dixon.
Winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play, “Circle Mirror Transformation” shows audiences how life can be explored through games. When James, Lauren, Theresa and Schultz join Marty’s summer acting class at a Vermont community center, they soon learn that the simple games they play expose more about their personal lives than they ever imagined. Over the course of six weeks, relationships are tested, secrets revealed, and past issues are faced, leaving everyone changed.
Backstage Magazine describes it as “real people exploring their lives through tiny leaps of faith and creativity.” “Circle Mirror Transformation” will run from Wednesday through Oct. 6.
On the last night of his life, Edgar Allan Poe was found wandering the streets of Baltimore, alone and dressed in another man’s clothes. In this fictional account of that night, Poe is taken to an asylum where he (with the help of his fellow inmates) performs four tales Poe himself considered his best: “The Raven,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” “Nightfall with Edgar Allen Poe” will run from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3.
All performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on campus in the New Theater at 540 N. Seventh St. Tickets are free to ISU students with their school ID. Cost to the public is $10. Tickets for each show can be purchased at the New Theater Ticket Office window or by calling 812-237-3333 between noon and 4:30 p.m. on the weekdays leading to the show’s opening.
In addition to the plays, the Department of Theater will be the host for a special two-night event Nov. 9 and 10. Playwright and actress Rohina Malik will perform a powerful one-woman show — “Unveiled” — which Malik wrote.
Malik plays five different Muslim women who share with the audience, over tea, their experiences in a post-9/11 world. This show, which opened in 2009, has been enthusiastically acclaimed by critics throughout the United States. Chris Jones, of the Chicago Tribune, wrote, “Rohina Malik, the hugely talented writer-actress at the center of the Victory Gardens solo show ‘Unveiled,’ is a remarkable new theatrical voice in Chicago. In her rich, up-beat and very enjoyable 70-minute collection of five character studies of Muslim women in modern-day America, Malik gives voice to characters from whom we hear far too little in the theater.”
In addition to the show, a discussion on hate crimes, led by Stephen Wessler, an expert on the prevention of hate violence, and ISU professor Tom Johnson of the Center for Religion, Health and Spirituality, will follow each performance. “Unveiled” will run at 7:30 p.m. in the New Theater. Performances are free, but a ticket is necessary for admittance. Get tickets Nov. 4-9 at the New Theater Ticket Office.
