Terre Haute Community Band to present ‘Till the End of Time’

TERRE HAUTE — The idea expressed in the theme “Till the End of Time” is everlasting love, one that endures beyond the concept of time or more realistically the lifetime of the lovers. It is a sentiment that has been expressed musically over and over through the years. The Terre Haute Community Band has chosen to perform music that expresses love through different musical formats at the first concert of its 2012 season.

“Till the End of Time” will be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute. Admission is free.

John Philip Sousa, known primarily for his military inspired marches, also had a deep appreciation of the fairer sex. The march “Fairest of the Fair” recalled a pretty girl he had seen but never met. Often regarded as one of his most melodic and best-written marches it has a light, bouncy opening and heroic ending.

The most famous of all the “Big Bands” was the Glenn Miller Orchestra; its biggest hit was “In the Mood.” Bandleader and composer Artie Shaw didn’t record the tune because it was too long for a 78 rpm record, but Miller, a gifted editor, was able to pare the melody down to the “meat and potatoes” of the tune.

The basics of “In the Mood” include the famous introduction featuring the saxes in unison, the catchy riff that anchors the tune, and the suspense building ending — all ingredients of the classic Miller sound.

Also part of the program, “As Summer Was Just Beginning,” is subtitled “Song for James Dean” because it was written in his memory. Dean made only three movies before his tragic death at age 24. “Wine, Women and Song” is a waltz commissioned for the Vienna Men’s Choral Association in 1869. Its fanciful title was drawn from an old adage, “Who loves not wine, women and song remains a fool his whole life long.”

An immigrant from Ireland, Victor Herbert was a popular composer of light opera, and “Gypsy Love Song” is from his operetta “The Fortune Teller.” Another composer who became an American citizen was Australian born Percy Aldridge Grainger whose “Country Gardens” is his adaptation of an English folk dance tune.

Conductor Yvonne Newlin begins her eighth season with the Community Band and recently retired from her full-time teaching position at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Ill.

Newlin was quick to thank the Wabash Valley Community Foundation for its grant which purchased new musicians chairs for the band. She is also pleased to report grants from Arts Illiana, and the City of Terre Haute for on-going financial support of the band.
