Artist’s goal is to teach hurting people to ‘paint their pain’

TERRE HAUTE — Julia London-Meddles moved to Terre Haute in 2011. A self-taught artist with commissioned works including murals in Tennessee and Alabama, she recently began exhibiting her work in Wabash Valley art shows and events.

Recently, her work was part of the “First Brush of Spring”  in New Harmony, sponsored the Hoosier Salon.

She also had a piece accepted in a juried show earlier this year at the Halcydn Art Gallery. In addition, she is showing her work with the Wabash Valley Art Guild.

She says that “life” simply inspires her work. As a registered nurse, she specializes in working with human behavioral health and hurting adolescents, her goal is to teach hurting individuals to “paint their pain.”

She believes working with colored pencils, clay products or keeping journals on art progress leads to a healthier life; expressing one’s feelings though art can lead to healing.

Her work shows remarkable design skills and outstanding craftsmanship. The colors are beautiful and sing out with clarity and special joy, as evidenced by the pencil painting called “Siren,” which will be on display this month on the main floor of the Vigo County Public Library.

London-Meddles is a member of the Hoosier Salon and the Colored Pencil Society of America.

She is a member of several well known art guilds and associations in the Valley including the River City Art Association.
