Historical Society plans trip to Indy

TERRE HAUTE —

The Vigo County Historical Society is offering a day trip to Indianapolis on May 3 for those who would like to visit the Indiana Landmarks Center and the Indianapolis Decorators’ Show House.

The spectacularly restored Indiana Landmarks Center once housed the Central Avenue Methodist Church at 12th Street and Central Avenue, which had the largest Methodist congregation in the state.

After falling into disrepair, it has undergone a multimillion dollar restoration through the generosity of the Bill Cook family of Bloomington. It is now the new cultural venue and state headquarters for Indiana Landmarks.

Trip participants will be given a guided tour of the building and attend the 2012 Decorators’ Show House and Gardens, which is the former Tobias Home.

Each year, the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild selects a home, and Indianapolis decorators and landscape designers completely transform it into a show place open to the public as a fundraiser for Wishard Hospital.

The group will leave from the Historical Museum, at Sixth and Washington streets, at 9:30 a.m., travel in a Turner coach to Indianapolis and return to Terre Haute at about 5:30 p.m. The group will have lunch at the show house.

The cost of the trip, which includes transportation, a guided tour of Indiana Landmarks Center, and tickets to the Decorators’ Show House, is $50. Call (812) 235-9717 to make a reservation. The number of available seats on the coach is limited.
