Shawnee presents a classic tale of love, betrayal, murder

Bloomfield — Shawnee Theatre’s final show of its 53rd season is “Dial M for Murder” by Frederick Knott.

Trapped in a marriage with a man who married her for her money, Margot hardly suspects that Tony knows she has been involved with American writer Max. Even more shocking is that Tony plans to murder her for her fortune. Will he succeed? The play is a dark, dangerous whodunit of forbidden love, suspense, blackmailers and backstabbers — figuratively and literally. (Rated PG-13)

“‘Dial M for Murder’ is a very tightly written script by Frederick Knott that Alfred Hitchcock actually used when making his 1954 film of the same title starring Grace Kelly,” said Kevin Lee Guthridge, producing artistic director. “Knott, who also wrote Wait Until Dark, has a great ability to write thrillers for the stage, and this is certainly no exception. It has all the makings of a suspense thriller and will keep the audience guessing to the very end.  We have a great cast for this show, and some impressive technical aspects that will combine to add a chilling edge to this already great script.”

“‘Dial M for Murder’ is a classic play which presents us with very human characters who are pressed into extreme circumstances,” said Josh Carroll, director and associate producing artistic director. “Max and Margot may be trying to put their past behind them, but for Tony, the time for reconciliation has long passed. His love, now warped and twisted, has become fuel to rid himself of his wife and claim her fortune for his own. This production will put the Hitchcock classic directly in front of you, suspenseful moment by suspenseful moment.”

The play will open at 8 p.m. today and runs one week with a total of four performances. Tickets are $14 for adults or $7 for children.
