Edgar County Student Art Show at Bicentennial Art Center

PARIS, ILL. — The Bicentennial Art Center in Paris is featuring the creative work of Edgar County junior and senior high students in the Annual Edgar County Student Art Show, which opened March 28, and continues through April 29. A reception will be April 29, beginning at 1 p.m.

The main floor galleries display art projects completed during this school year and selected for inclusion in the show by the students’ art instructors. Participating schools and their teachers are: Chrisman Junior and Senior High schools, Mary Phipps and Levi Atkins; Crestwood Junior High School, Mary St. Clair and student teacher Jessica Burress; Kansas Junior and Senior High schools, Barbara Markewitz; Mayo Middle School, Partners in Education Art Enrichment Program, Kristi Bosc, program coordinator and art instructor (program is fully funded through donations.); PATH (Paris Area Teachers at Home); Paris Cooperative High School, Carrieann Phegley; St. Mary’s Junior High School, Christi McClain; and Shiloh Junior and Senior High schools, Randi Pollock.

The works submitted by the junior and senior high students were judged by Laura Mason, a retired art teacher from Terre Haute. During the show’s reception, Mason will present the awards to students whose work she has selected in two- and three-dimensional areas in both junior and senior high divisions. Those receiving awards from the judge are:  

Judge’s Choice Award, 2D Category: Ryan Whitley, eighth grade, Mayo Middle School, Dog Drawing. 2D Category, Jr. High: 1st Place: Zoe Orndorff, sixth grade, St. Mary’s, “Daydream”; 2nd Place: Griffin Johnson, seventh grade, Crestwood, “Michael Phelps”; 3rd Place: Grace Vaughn, eighth grade, Crestwood, “Wolf”; and Honorable Mention: Whitney Milburn, seventh grade, Shiloh Jr. High, “Blobs.” 2D Category, High School: 1st Place: Emily Turner, 12th grade, Paris Cooperative High School, “Safari”; 2nd Place: Samantha Tucker, 12th grade, PATH, Moth Dress”; 3rd Place: Rio Long, 12th grade, Paris Cooperative High School, “Griffin”; and Honorable Mention: Charlee Walker, 10th grade, Kansas High School, “Work Boots.”   

Judge’s Choice Award, 3D Category: Emily Wacaser, 12th grade, Paris Cooperative High School, “Bellezza.” 3D Category, Jr. High: 1st Place: Noah Hanley, seventh grade, Mayo Middle School, Giraffe Mask; 2nd Place: Korey Balch, seventh grade, Kansas Jr. High School, “Kangaroo”; 3rd Place: Haylee Felgenhauer, eighth grade, St. Mary’s, “Whittling Away”; and Honorable Mention: Emily Hall, sixth grade, PATH, “Daffodils.” 3D Category, High School: 1st Place: Emily Turner, 12th grade, Paris Cooperative High School, “Broken”; 2nd Place: Lauren Funkhouser, 12th grade, PATH, “Raining In Color”; 3rd Place: Josie Rush, 10th grade, Paris Cooperative High School, “Fairies”; and Honorable Mention: Dylan Rardin, 12th grade, Kansas High School, Stuffed Figure. The Best Overall School Display award was given to Mayo Middle School. Every student who has artwork on display in the show will receive a participation certificate at the reception.

The Bicentennial Art Center is at 132 S. Central Ave. Paris.

Programs and activities of the Bicentennial Art Center are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
