Shades plans Archaeology Day events Sept. 8

WAVELAND, Ind. — Archaeology Day at Shades State Park on Sept. 8 offers visitors a chance to explore life before written history through hands-on activities.

The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Hickory Shelter area with “Dirty Digging with an Archaeologist.” DNR archaeologist Cathy Draeger-Williams will show visitors how an archaeological excavation works.

From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., participants can try a variety of activities, including a mock archaeological dig, molding a pot from clay, practicing prehistoric fire-starting techniques, weaving cattails, painting petroglyphs and more. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own collections of stone tools and arrowheads for identification, and to learn more about the artifacts.

At 1 p.m., Draeger-Williams will demonstrate how to use an atlatl, a prehistoric spear-throwing device for hunting. The throwing field will be open until 4 p.m. for visitors to try the atlatl themselves.

The event is free, although the standard park entrance fee of $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle applies.

For more information, call (765) 597-2654.

Shades State Park is at 7751 S. 890 W., in Waveland.
