ISU Woodwind Quartet concert Monday

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State University Faculty Woodwind Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Recital Hall of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts at Seventh and Chestnut streets.

The concert will feature pianist Martha Krasnican will join the quartet, as the group performs the Thuille Sextet for piano and winds. Guest soloist Les Thimmig of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will perform Four Ballads and Yolanda Variations and will perform with the quartet the Mladi Youth Suite Sextet for woodwinds and bass clarinet.

Quartet members include Joyce Wilson, flute; Nik Taylor, oboe; Kelley Niiyama, clarinet; Brian Kilp, horn; and Chad Roseland, bassoon.

Thimmig grew up in Joliet, Ill., where the many opportunities of the greater Chicago area allowed him to develop his interests in classical performance (clarinet), jazz performance (saxophone), composition (classical and jazz), and conducting. During his collegiate education at Eastman and Yale, he was also active in the free-lance performing areas of New York City, Boston, and the metro areas. After a year of teaching in Yale’s theory department, he assumed the directorship of the composition/theory department of the University of Victoria (B.C.). After two years, he was brought to the University of Wisconsin to direct the composition program, later adding woodwind performance and jazz studies to his educational offerings.

The concert is free. For more information, call (812) 237-2771.
