Rose promoting innovation at Indianapolis Motor Speedway exhibit

Student projects featured from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has joined battery technology leader EnerDel Inc. to showcase innovation in education and industry during a special exhibit through Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for fans attending festivities involving this year’s Indianapolis 500 race.

The exhibit, open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., promotes the college’s advanced transportation system initiative, sponsored by EnerDel, which strives to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists by giving them the tools and experience necessary to help America secure a more energy-efficient future.

Through the advanced transportation projects, students learn modern automotive, aerospace and off-highway design methodologies and technologies and participate in national engineering design challenges in promoting sustainable energy resources.

Student projects featured in the exhibit are EcoCAR, in which students have spent the past year producing a prototype advanced technology vehicle to achieve improved fuel economy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions and the Human Powered Vehicle Race Team, three-time national champion in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Human Powered Vehicle competitions.

The Efficient Vehicle project, which achieved 1,803 miles per gallon at this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition, is also featured, along with Team Rose Motorsports, Rose-Hulman’s oldest motorsports organization; the Society of Automotive Engineers’ Formula One project; and the Design-Build-Fly project, which has unmanned, electrical and radio-controlled aircraft completing a set of missions.

EnerDel is an Indiana company developing leading battery technology and systems and is establishing the manufacturing base for technology. Advanced lithium-ion batteries have been created that are long-lasting and safe, with high power and high energy characteristics, all essential for products to be used in the demanding automotive market. The company was formed in 2004 through a collaboration of industry leaders Ener1, Delphi Corporation and Itochu Corporation.
