Valley Art Guild announces winners in Spring Show

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Art Guild 35th Annual Spring Art Show took place on May 18-20 at Honey Creek Mall in the former Fred Myers Jewelry Store space.

The guild exhibited 95 works of art created by 35 member and nonmember artists. The works ranged from ceramics to photography and painting and every imaginable media between including a duct tape rendering by neil Garrison.

The artists themselves chose what to place in the show but the decision of awards rested solely in the hands of juror Steve Letsinger. Letsinger is coordinator of visual arts and curator for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. A native Hoosier, who is himself a fine arts photographer, Letsinger had the daunting task of sifting through the works to select the very best for recognition.

The award for this year’s Best of Show Award went to Deborah Anderson for her intarsia wood piece entitled “Keen Senses.”

Other works recognized with awards include:

In the category of drawing:

• First Place: Jim Rhodes for pencil drawing “Haley Tower”

• Second Place: neil Garrison for pen and ink drawing “Telefan”

• Honorable Mention: Julie Bricker for “Breezy Day” and Julia London-Meddles for “Fish in the Sea”

• Second Place: Bob Riseling for “Mystical Tee Pee”

• Third Place: Jim McMullen for “Old Church Window”

• Honorable Mention: Randy Parker for “Pier to the Deep Blue”

• First Place: John Hemminghouse for “Robinwood 2424”

• Second Place: Todd Stokes for “Seedlings”

• Honorable Mentions: John Hemminghouse for “First Float” and Edith Acton for “Criss Cross”

The ribbons and monetary prizes were awarded at a presentation ceremony and artist reception May 18 at the gallery space at Honey Creek. Music was provided by art guild vice president Edward Holloman and a jazz ensemble.

In addition to the judge’s awards, artists participating in the show selected Marsha Stewart’s painting “I Hope You Dance” for the Artists’ Choice Award. The public was encouraged to vote for their favorite, and John Hemminghouse’s woodcarving “Robinwood 2424” was the overwhelming favorite for the “People’s Choice Award.”

Many of the award winners will be on exhibit at Clabber Girl from June 2-29.
