Harrison Presidential Site presents ‘Favorite Sons,’ some from Valley

INDIANAPOLIS — Some were born in Indiana, some grew up in Indiana, and some were nominated or elected from Indiana.

“Indiana’s Favorite Sons” at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site focuses on Indiana presidential and vice presidential candidates through the years. Some Indiana “hopefuls” will also be explored — men who tried but were never party candidates.

This unique look at Indiana politics is on display through Nov. 10.

The following “Favorite Sons” are from the Terre Haute area:

• Birch Evans Bayh II (1928-)

Bayh was born in Terre Haute and graduated from the Purdue School of Agriculture in 1951. He earned his JD from the IU School of Law. Bayh served in the Indiana House of Representatives and as a United States senator. Bayh helped pass the Title IX for Higher Education Act which gave women equal opportunities in public education. Bayh also helped create the 26th Amendment which lowered the voting age to 18.

• William Henry Harrison (1773-1841)

Harrison is the son of Benjamin Harrison V, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. William Henry decided to pursue a military career after the death of his father. Harrison was appointed Secretary of the Northwest Territory by President Adams in 1798 and served as Northwest Territory Delegate in 1799. He held the position of Governor of Indiana Territory for 12 years and moved his wife and 10 children to Vincennes. After serving as a U.S. representative, Ohio State senator, U.S. senator and U.S. Minister to Columbia, Harrison was elected as the ninth U.S. president.

• Eugene V. Debs (1855-1926)

Eugene V. Debs was born in Terre Haute. His formal schooling ended when he was 14 and went to work for the railroad. Debs began his political career by working as city clerk in Terre Haute for the Democratic Party. He founded and was the first president of the American Railway Union and fought for workers’ rights. Debs became dissatisfied with the Democratic Party, converted to socialism, and helped found the Social Democratic Party in Chicago. Debs was nominated for president five times representing the Socialist Party and was imprisoned for violating the Espionage Act of 1918. He ran his 1920 presidential campaign from prison.

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site offers daily tours on the hour and half-hour from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sundays (June and July only) from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call (317) 631-1888 for more information.
