Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra set to begin rehearsals

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra rehearsals will begin at 7 p.m. Monday. Two concerts are scheduled.

The “Great American Songbook” concert featuring popular songs selected from the past 90 years will be presented at 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Scottish Rite Theatre.

The second concert, “It’s Beginning to Sound a Lot Like Christmas” will be presented at 3 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Cecilian Auditorium at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. All rehearsals are conducted at the Cecilian Auditorium.

The “Great American Songbook” offers the opportunity to showcase the talent of local singers with favorites like “By the Light of the Silvery Moon,” “Deep Purple,” “Moon River” and “Witchcraft.”

No program on the Great American Songbook could possibly overlook the work of Frank Sinatra, and the orchestra will play a medley, “Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes.” Highlights from “Wicked,” the award winning musical now entering its ninth year on Broadway, presents songs of more recent vintage.

“It’s Beginning to Sound a Lot Like Christmas” kicks off the Christmas season with new and traditional Christmas music. The popular intermission featuring free Christmas cookies and punch will continue to please the palate.

This year marks the fifth year for this holiday event at the Woods.

Music director James Chesterson announced that several positions are open this fall in the orchestra’s string section, and players interested should plan to attend Monday’s rehearsal or contact him at 812-535-6440 or james.chesterson@

frontier.com.

Musicians are expected to attend rehearsals from 7 to 9 p.m. each Monday in the Cecilian Auditorium until the Christmas concert. Rehearsals for the second half of the Sinfonietta season will begin on Jan. 7.

The winter/spring Sinfonietta season will include a concert in February at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a concert in March at the Scottish Rite Theatre in collaboration with the Vigo County Public Library’s Big Read program.
