TH woman claims prizes in puzzle image contest

TERRE HAUTE — The search started at midnight on Jan. 29, National Puzzle Day, and lasted through March. It is a search for something pretty rare — a distinctive, and irresistible photographic image that also can make a wonderful puzzle — wonderfully fun as well as wonderfully challenging.

In short, it was a search for a new Springbok jigsaw puzzle. For jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts, this is a big deal as Springbok Puzzles has a 49-year history of making puzzles noted for landmark imagery and innovation.

“This year’s contest was extremely competitive,” said Steve Streit, Springbok’s director of product development. “The competition was so tight that we had six finalists.” They also had more than 1,600 entries, more than double the amount of entries in 2011, the first year Springbok ran the contest.

“Because of the quality of the entries — their color, their composition and their originality — we selected not one, not two, but three contest images to become new puzzles,” Streit said. A result, he adds, that was completely unexpected.

The Grand Prize winner of the 2012 Springbok Image Contest is John Razza of Atlanta, Ga., with “Hot & Spicy,” a searing photo of miles of hot sauces. For second place, Springbok declared a tie between Jennifer Headlee of Terre Haute with “Crayon Jar,” and Martha Boers of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, with “Christmas Cookies.” Cash prizes were awarded to all and all three photographs will be part of Springbok’s 2012 Fall Puzzle Collection.
