TERRE HAUTE —
A busy and exciting summer is ahead for the Terre Haute Community Band as it prepares for the 2012 Summer Concert Season and hosting the second annual On the Banks of the Wabash Community Band Festival on July 21.
Start time for the On the Banks of the Wabash Band Festival will be announced after the full line-up of bands has been officially set. Nine bands have indicated they plan to participate in the festival, including a drum and bagpipe unit from Covington.
Current players and persons interested in performing with the band are asked to attend the first rehearsal at 7 p.m. Monday in the Cecilian Auditorium on the St. Mary-of-the-Woods College campus.
Conductor Yvonne Newlin notes that although auditions are not required, musicians should have a high school level competency in their musical skills to perform with the band.
The first concert, “Till the End of Time,” will be performed at 8 p.m. June 11 in Fairbanks Park and features romantic melodies ranging from Phillip Sousa’s “The Fairest of the Fair” to Victor Herbert's “Gypsy Love Song” and Johann Strauss’ “Wine, Women, and Song.”
Children will be the focus of the second concert on June 23, with the arrival of “Circus Days” complete with a ringmaster, prizes and such lively tunes as “The Screamer” by Fred Jewell, “Barnum & Bailey’s Favorite” by Karl King and the “Children’s March” by Percy Grainger.
On July 4 the band will present “Americans We” with traditional patriotic tunes. Active military personnel and veterans from all branches of service will be recognized at the concert, which precedes the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration. The next concert, on July 7, will present a similar theme, “From the New World” and an emphasis on Antonin Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.”
The Aug. 4 concert will present music from “Across the Great Divide” including Richard Rodgers’ “Oklahoma,” and Copland’s “Hoe-Down.” The last concert on Aug. 18 was fun to plan as the band searched for “The Best Marches You Never Heard Of.” All the concerts are presented in Fairbanks Park and are free, including the Community Band Festival.
Newlin is the Performing Arts coordinator and instructor at Lincoln Trail College and is now entering her ninth season conducting the THCB. The summer concert series is presented by the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department. Grants were also awarded by Arts Illiana, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the City of Terre Haute to support the band.
