Vigo County CASA Kids is hosting its third annual fundraising/awareness event, the Family Bash on the Wabash, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at Fairbanks Park. The Family Bash features family-friendly activities including food, games, prizes, a bounce house, pony cart rides, live entertainment and a silent auction. Community organizations and resources will be set up also.
The Family Bash raised nearly $3,000 in 2011 to help abused and neglected children in Vigo County. These funds are used to cover expenses for extracurricular and enrichment activities, basic needs such as clothing, bedding, and food, and to help support the mission on Vigo County CASA volunteer program.
CASA is an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Vigo County CASA serves more than 300 children annually, providing trained volunteer advocates to represent the best interests of foster children involved with the juvenile court system. Studies show that CASA advocacy creates stability. Children who have a CASA volunteer advocate receive more services, find permanent homes and are half as likely to return to the foster care system.

Annette Funicello, Mouseketeer and film star, dies
NEW YORK — Annette Funicello, who became a child star as a perky, cute-as-a-button Mouseketeer on “The Mickey Mouse Club” in the 1950s, then teamed up with Frankie Avalon in a string of ‘60s fun-in-the-sun movies with titles like “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “Bikini Beach,” died today. She was 70.
