Theatre brings the famous game to life

BLOOMFIELD — The Shawnee Theatre’s first show of its 53rd season is “Clue: The Musical” based on the Parker Brothers’ board game.

The internationally popular game is now a fun-filled musical murder-mystery, which brings the world’s best known suspects to life and invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room, and with what weapon?

At the beginning of the show, just as in the game, an audience member is invited on the stage to draw three cards: one weapon, one character and one room, that will combine to be the final solution. Throughout the show, based on what those cards are, different dialogue is used, and new clues are revealed that lead to that solution and the audience will play along from their seats and attempt to solve the murder for themselves. Bring the whole family to play along with the action on the stage.

“The Directorial metaphor we are exploring in this production is the ‘?.’ I would argue that ‘Clue’ is a near perfect storm in the world of board games. Generations of players have delighted in the quest to solve the questions of ‘Who’, ‘Where,’ and with ‘What,’ but not the ‘Why,’” director Jerry Morrison said. “Directing this endearingly quirky musical has given me the opportunity to finally learn the possible motives of our brightly hued murderers. This has been an exhilarating experience of bringing theatrical life to the multi-faceted kaleidoscope of emotions hidden deep within the walls of Boddy Manor.”

“Clue: The Musical” will open at 8 p.m. June 14, and will run two weeks with a total of eight performances. Performances at Shawnee will continue each Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. throughout the summer. Tickets are $16 for adults or $8 for children.
