Crosley Radio Players offering new dinner theater in Paris

PARIS, Ill. — The Crosley Radio Players will usher in 2012 by inaugurating a new dinner theater at the Tuscany Restaurant in Paris, Ill., on Sunday evening. Tuscany, at 1218 N. Main St., in Paris will be offering a complete buffet dinner, with drink and dessert, plus the Crosley Radio Players’ 80-minute show for $17 per person.

The Crosley show will feature episodes of “Challenge of the Yukon,” “Command Performance” and “Fibber McGee and Molly.” Many of the sound effects used will be generated live, just as they were when the shows were on radio.

“Challenge of the Yukon,” which started its radio run in 1938, featured the adventures of Sergeant William Preston of the Northwest Mounted Police in the 1898 Yukon gold rush. The show was later renamed, “Sergeant Preston of the Yukon,” a name it would use for the rest of its radio run and through its entire TV run as well.

“Command Performance” aired on the Armed Forces Radio Network from 1942 until 1949. G.I.s from around the world would write to “Command Performance” in Hollywood, requesting their favorite stars to do songs and familiar routines. Each show was hosted by a well-known star of the era.

“Fibber McGee and Molly” was one of the best-known radio comedies, starting its 24 year radio run in 1935. It was one of the first shows to weave commercials into the fabric of the show, so as to not disrupt the show’s timing.  Many long-running gags and reoccurring characters delighted radio audiences for more than two decades.

Reservations are strongly suggested, as seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Tuscany in Paris or by calling (217) 466-1610.  Buffet begins at 5 p.m. CDT, with the Crosley show at 6:30.
