‘Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe’ opens Halloween night

TERRE HAUTE — The Halloween season is quickly approaching, and the Indiana State University Department of Theater is preparing a “madly” poetic tribute to one of Americas finest writers: “Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe.”

On the last night of his life Poe was found wandering the streets of Baltimore, alone and dressed in another man’s clothes.

In this fictional account of that night, Poe is taken to an asylum where he (with the help of his fellow inmates) performs four tales Poe himself considered his best: “The Raven,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

“Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe” is being directed by Theater Department Professor Julie Dixon.

“When I choose plays, I always think about what people will enjoy. I want people to be excited about acting in a play and I want the audience to enjoy what they are seeing,” Dixon said. “I remember when I was in high school, a substitute teacher came into my class and read ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ aloud. It terrified me. So when I came across this play, I thought it would be fun and exciting.”

In addition to the play being set in an asylum, the show will open on Halloween night.

“I told my colleague that I was doing this show in November, and he suggested that it would be a good idea to open ‘Nightfall’ on Halloween night. It was a wonderful idea, so we did it,” Dixon said.

“Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe” will run from Wednesday through Nov. 3. All performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the New Theater at 540 N. Seventh St., on the Indiana State University campus. Tickets are free to ISU students with their school ID. Cost to the public is $10. Tickets can be purchased at the New Theater Ticket Office window or by calling 812-237-3333 between the hours of noon and 4:30 p.m. on the weekdays leading to the show’s opening.
